|summary=This book provides a unified view of tomographic techniques, a common mathematical framework, and an in-depth treatment of reconstruction algorithms. It focuses on the reconstruction of a function from line or plane integrals, with special emphasis on applications in radiology, science, and engineering. The Mathematics of Computerized Tomography covers the relevant mathematical theory of the Radon transform and related transforms and also studies more practical questions such as stability, sampling, resolution, and accuracy. Quite a bit of attention is given to the derivation, analysis, and practical examination of reconstruction algorithms, for both standard problems and problems with incomplete data.
|author=Stephen Brown, Zvonko Vranesic
|publisher=McGraw Hill
|summary=Fundamentals of Digital Logic With Verilog Designteaches the basic design techniques for logic circuits. It emphasizes the synthesis of circuits and explains how circuits are implemented in real chips. Fundamental concepts are illustrated by using small examples.

Use of CAD software is well integrated into the book. The CAD software provides automatic mapping of a design written in Verilog into Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs). Students will be able to try, firsthand, the book's Verilog examples (over 140) and homework problems.

Engineers use Quartus CAD for designing, simulating, testing and implementing logic circuits. The version included with this text supports all major features of the commercial product and comes with a compiler for the IEEE standard Verilog language. Students will be able to:
*enter a design into the CAD system
*compile the design into a selected device
*simulate the functionality and timing of the resulting circuit
*implement the designs in actual devices (using the school's laboratory facilities)

Verilog is a complex language, so it is introduced gradually in the book. Each Verilog feature is presented as it becomes pertinent for the circuits being discussed. To teach the student to use the Quartus CAD, the book includes three tutorials.
|author=Ira H. Abbott, A. E. von Doenhoff
|publisher=Dover Publications
|summary="Most useful in working with wing sections and methods for using section data to predict wing characteristics . . . much detailed geometric and aerodynamic data." — Mechanical Engineering
The first edition of this work has been corrected and republished in answer to the continuing demand for a concise compilation of the subsonic aerodynamics characteristics of modern NASA wing sections together with a description of their geometry and associated theory. These wing sections, or their derivatives, continue to be the ones most commonly used for airplanes designed for both subsonic and supersonic speeds, and for helicopter rotor blades, propeller blades, and high performance fans.
Intended to be primarily a reference work for engineers and students, the book devotes over 300 pages to theoretical and experimental considerations. The theoretical treatment progresses from elementary considerations to methods used for the design of NACA low-drag airfoils. Methods and data are presented for using wingsection data to predict wing characteristics, and judiciously selected plots and cross-plots of experimental data are presented for readily useful correlation of certain simplifying assumptions made in the analyses. The chapters on theory of thin wings and airfoils are particularly valuable, as is the complete summary of the NACA's experimental observations and system of constructing families of airfoils. Mathematics has been kept to a minimum, but it is assumed that the reader has a knowledge of differential and integral calculus, and elementary mechanics.
The appendix of over 350 pages contains these tables: Basic Thickness Forms, Mean Lines, Airfoil Ordinates, and Aerodynamic Characteristics of Wing Sections.
|publisher=Lars Müller Publishers
|summary=A classic of utopian literature, more urgent than ever: Buckminster Fuller's provocative blueprint for the future

Composed of lectures given by Buckminster Fuller throughout the world in the 1960s, Utopia or Oblivion presents the thesis that humanity, for the first time in its history, has the opportunity to create a world where the needs of 100% of humanity are met. Fuller's grandson, in the introduction, refers to this selection as "hardcore Bucky," as these essays display Fuller's investigations into mathematics, geometry and how they intersect with the arts, music and world peace. In Fuller's words, "This is what man tends to call utopia. It's a fairly small word, but inadequate to describe the extraordinary new freedom of man in a new relationship to universe―the alternative of which is oblivion.

First published in 1969 and then reprinted by Lars Müller in 2008, Utopia or Oblivion also includes one of the earliest published discussions of Fuller's World Game, a revolutionary "game" that set as the goal for players, that the world "works" for 100% of humanity to nobody's disadvantage. It challenged players to overlook traditional world units such as nations, states and other political and economic divisions.
|author=R. Buckminster Fuller
|publisher=Lars Muller
|summary=In this accessible volume, first published in 1969, Fuller offers advice on how to guide "spaceship earth" toward a sustainable future

Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) was an architect, engineer, geometrician, cartographer, philosopher, futurist, inventor of the famous geodesic dome, and one of the most brilliant thinkers of his time. For more than five decades, he set forth his comprehensive perspective on the world’s problems in numerous essays, which offer an illuminating insight into the intellectual universe of this renaissance man. These texts remain surprisingly topical even today, decades after their initial publication. While Fuller wrote the works in the 1960’s and 1970’s, they could not be more timely: like desperately needed time-capsules of wisdom for the critical moment he foresaw, and in which we find ourselves. Long out of print, they are now being published again, together with commentary by Jaime Snyder, the grandson of Buckminster Fuller. Designed for a new generation of readers, Snyder prepared these editions with supplementary material providing background on the texts, factual updates, and interpretation of his visionary ideas.

Initially published in 1969, and one of Fuller’s most popular works, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth is a brilliant synthesis of his world view. In this very accessible volume, Fuller investigates the great challenges facing humanity, and the principles for avoiding extinction and “exercising our option to make it.” How will humanity survive? How does automation influence individualization? How can we utilize our resources more effectively to realize our potential to end poverty in this generation? He questions the concept of specialization, calls for a design revolution of innovation, and offers advice on how to guide “spaceship earth” toward a sustainable future. And it Came to Pass – Not to Stay brings together Buckminster Fuller’s lyrical and philosophical best, including seven “essays“ in a form he called his “ventilated prose”, and as always addressing the current global crisis and his predictions for the future. These essays, including “How Little I Know”, “What I am Trying to Do”, “Soft Revolution”, and “Ethics”, put the task of ushering in a new era of humanity in the context of “always starting with the universe.“ In rare form, Fuller elegantly weaves the personal, the playful, the simple, and the profound.
|summary=The goal of this widely used book is to present in a highly illustrated format the principles of design for good hearing and freedom from noise in and around buildings. The more than 540 illustrations are not merely supplements to the text as with nearly all traditional books. In this book, the illustrations are the core of the coverage of basic principles of sound and hearing, sound absorption and noise reduction, sound isolation and criteria for noise, control of HVAC systems noise and vibrations, auditorium acoustics design, and electronic sound systems. The book is written for architects, interior designers, engineers, and all others concerned with the design and construction of buildings who need to know the basics of architectural acoustics, but who do not have the time to digest wordy presentations. Designers who understand the basic principles of acoustics will possess an important new tool for shaping the built environment. Hopefully, not only better acoustical environments, but also better buildings should result. Adopting professors will also receive an instructor's guide. An unabridged J. For over two decades, Site Planning has remained the only comprehensive source of information on all the principal activities and concerns of arranging the outdoor physical environment. Now, new illustrations double the visual material and one hundred pages of new appendixes cover special techniques, provide references to more detailed technical sources, and put numerical standards in a concise form.

An introduction summarizes the site planning process. This is followed by a case study of a typical professional project and ten chapters which provide new materials on user analysis, programming, site planning for built places, housing tenures and their planning implications, cost estimating, mapping, the reading of air photographs, site design for housing in developing countries, design strategies, environmental impact analyses, and many others -- all illustrated with in-text photographs and line drawings and with Lynch's characteristic marginal sketches.

{{Title|title=City Sense and City Design: Writings and Projects of Kevin Lynch
|author=Kevin Lynch
|publisher=The MIT Press
|summary=Kevin Lynch's books are the classic underpinnings of modern urban planning and design, yet they are only a part of his rich legacy of ideas about human purposes and values in built form. City Sense and City Design brings together Lynch's remaining work, including professional design and planning projects that show how he translated many of his ideas and theories into practice. An invaluable sourcebook of design knowledge, City Sense and City Design completes the record of one of the foremost environmental design theorists of our time and leads to a deeper understanding of his distinctively humanistic philosophy.

The editors, both former students of Lynch, provide a cogent summary of his career and of the role he played in shaping and transforming the American urban design profession during the 1950s, the 1960s, and the 1970s. Each of the seven thematic groupings of writings and projects that follow begins with a short introduction explaining their content and their background.

The essays in part I focus on the premises of Lynch's work: his novel reading of large-scale built environments and the notion that the design of an urban landscape should be as meaningful and intimate as the natural landscape. In part II, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings—ideas that culminated in his seminal work, The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. The examples of both small-scale and large-scale analysis of visual form in part III are followed by three parts on city design. These include Lynch's more theoretical works on complex planning decisions involving both functional (spatial and structural organization) and normative (how the city works in human terms) approaches, articles discussing the principles that guided Lynch's teaching and practice of city design, and descriptions of Lynch's own projects in the Boston area and elsewhere. The book concludes with essays written late in Lynch's career, fantasy pieces describing utopias and offering new design freedoms and scenarios warning of horrifying "cacotopias."
What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
|summary=An inspirational and insightful resource for architecture students and professionals that offers a new way of thinking about the architecture to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Inspired by the complexity and heterogeneity of the world around us, and by the rise of new technologies and their associated behavior, The Architecture Concept Book seeks to stimulate young architects and students to think outside of what is often a rather conservative and self-perpetuating professional domain and to be influenced by everything around them.

Organized thematically, the book explores thirty-five architectural concepts, which cover wide-ranging topics not always typically included in the study of architecture. James Tait traces the connections between concepts such as familiarity, control, and memory and basic architectural components such as the entrance, arch, columns, and services, to social phenomena such as gathering and reveling, before concluding with texts on shelter, relaxing, and working. Even in a digital age, Tait insists that “we must always think before we design. We must always have a reason to build.”

Each theme is accompanied by photographs, plans, and illustrations specifically drawn by the author to explain spatial ideas, form small scale to the urban.
|publisher=The MIT Press
|summary=An attempt to free architecture from site and program constraints and to counter the profusion of ever bigger architecture books with ever smaller content.

Some may call it the first manifesto of the twenty-first century, for it lays down a new way to think about architecture. Others may think of it as the last architectural treatise, for it provides a discursive container for ideas that would otherwise be lost. Whatever genre it belongs to, SITELESS is a new kind of architecture book that seems to have come out of nowhere. Its author, a young French architect practicing in Tokyo, admits he “didn't do this out of reverence toward architecture, but rather out of a profound boredom with the discipline, as a sort of compulsive reaction.” What would happen if architects liberated their minds from the constraints of site, program, and budget? he asks. The result is a book that is saturated with forms, and as free of words as any architecture book the MIT Press has ever published.

The 1001 building forms in SITELESS include structural parasites, chain link towers, ball bearing floors, corrugated corners, exponential balconies, radial facades, crawling frames, forensic housing—and other architectural ideas that may require construction techniques not yet developed and a relation to gravity not yet achieved. SITELESS presents an open-ended compendium of visual ideas for the architectural imagination to draw from. The forms, drawn freehand (to avoid software-specific shapes) but from a constant viewing angle, are presented twelve to a page, with no scale, order, or end to the series. After setting down 1001 forms in siteless conditions and embryonic stages, Blanciak takes one of the forms and performs a “scale test,” showing what happens when one of these fantastic ideas is subjected to the actual constraints of a site in central Tokyo. The book ends by illustrating the potential of these shapes to morph into actual building proportions.
|author=L. M. Milne-Thomson
|summary=This classic text offers a thorough, clear and methodical introductory exposition of the mathematical theory of fluid motion, useful in applications to both hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Departing radically from traditional approaches, the author bases the treatment on vector methods and notation with their natural consequence in two dimensions — the complex variable.
New features in this edition include: a chapter bringing together various exact treatments of two-dimensional motion with a free surface in a gravitational field, followed by one dealing with approximations (mostly linearized) relevant to this but with emphasis on waves; a chapter on tensor methods applied to the flow of viscous fluids; a chapter on flow with small Reynolds' number, including an account of a novel application of the complex variable to Stokes' flow; and an outline of the theory of two-dimensional laminar flow in a boundary layer.
Prerequisites are restricted to a knowledge of elementary calculus since any additional mathematics is introduced as required, making this a self-contained treatment. Nearly 400 diagrams help illustrate the text and over 600 exercises are collected into sets of examples at the end of each chapter.
|author=William H. Dorrance
|publisher=Dover Publications
|summary=This frequently cited text addresses theories for treating the laminar and turbulent boundary layers of reacting gas mixtures. The theories are developed from fundamentals, and all related chemical, thermodynamic, and physical concepts are described in a fashion that provides a self-contained treatment. In addition, the book presents useful equations for calculating heat transfer between reacting gas boundary layers and reacting, melting, sublimating, and otherwise decomposing surfaces.
Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate engineering courses in modern boundary-layer theory, this volume also serves as a valuable reference for professionals. Along with its thorough coverage of the theories for treating reacting laminar and turbulent boundary layers, the text also describes the underlying theories and methods of calculating transport and thermodynamic properties for dilute gas mixtures. Certain useful concepts from thermochemistry are also examined in detail. All theories are developed from the fundamentals, with a focus on the basic physics of interactions between like and unlike particles and the roles these interactions play in determining the transport properties of reacting gas mixtures.
|summary=This is a book on how to design, build, and fly hydrofoil boats. It begins with the history and theory of hydrofoils, and continues with an explanation of flight characteristics, such as; stability, control, lift, drag, cavitation, and ventilation. Foil configurations, weight and balance, flying height, and roll management are covered as well as calculations of stress, hull configuration, and wing sizing. One section demonstrates methods for comparing designs, and explores specific design ideas for motorized, human powered, and sail powered hydrofoils. Piloting and trouble shooting are followed by a bibliography and index. This very complete book includes over 270 illustrations, charts and tables on the subject of creating hydrofoil boats. Because hydrofoils fly like airplanes, except in a denser fluid, the book's subject could be described as aerodynamics adapted to hydrofoils. It is the best book available for hydrofoil enthusiasts. There is no other book like it.
|summary=Designed as both a textbook for advanced engineering students and a reference book for practicing engineers, this highly regarded work deals not only with the practical aspects of aeroelasticity, but the aerodynamic and structural tools upon which these rest. Accordingly, the book divides roughly into two halves: the first deals with the tools and the second with applications of the tools to aeroelastic phenomena.
Topics include deformation of airplane structures under static and dynamic loads, approximate methods of computing natural mode shapes and frequencies, two-and three-dimensional incompressible flow, compressible flow, wings and bodies in three-dimensional unsteady flow, static aeroelastic phenomena, flutter, dynamic response phenomena, aeroelastic model theory, model design and construction, testing techniques and more. Chapters have been designed to progress from easy to difficult so that instructors using this book as an elementary text in aeroelasticity will find their purposes served by simply using the first parts of selected chapters.
Helpful appendixes deal with such mathematical tools as matrices and linear systems (prerequisites include the usual engineering mathematics courses and advanced calculus}, while many numerical examples are included throughout the text. Engineering students as well as practicing engineers will find this work an unmatched treatment of the topic and an indispensable reference for their libraries.
|summary=The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of fluids and are an invaluable addition to the toolbox of every physicist, applied mathematician, and engineer. The equations arise from applying Newton's laws of motion to a moving fluid and are considered, when used in combination with mass and energy conservation rules, to be the fundamental governing equations of fluid motion. They are relevant across many disciplines, from astrophysics and oceanic sciences to aerospace engineering and materials science. This Student's Guide provides a clear and focused presentation of the derivation, significance and applications of the Navier-Stokes equations, along with the associated continuity and energy equations. Propellers have their unique aerodynamic terminology, forces and handling requirements, knowledge of which all pilots must be aware of to safely handle the aircraft they are flying. Incorrect propeller handling can cause damage to the aircraft and reduce performance efficiency. Most aerodynamic text books only give a brief view of propeller aerodynamics; however this book Propeller Aerodynamics delves more deeply into this subject. The book covers the history and operation of aircraft propellers, prop pitch, thrust, efficiency, aircraft stability, prop forces, constant-speed units and more. This is all essential reading for the pilot progressing to more advanced high-performance aircraft.
|publisher=Dover Publications
|summary="An outstanding textbook." — Scientific, Medical and Technical Books
Almost unsurpassed as a balanced, well-written account of fundamental fluid dynamics, Theory of Flight may still be recommended for a clearer presentation than is to be forced in many more recent works, though it is limited to situations in which air compressibility effects are unimportant.
Designed for the college senior or beginning graduate student, the text assumes a knowledge of the principles of calculus and some training in general mechanics. It is unusual in offering a well-balanced introduction, stressing equally theory and practice. It avoids the formidable mathematical structure of fluid dynamics, while conveying by often unorthodox methods a full understanding of the physical phenomena and mathematical concepts of aeronautical engineering. Theory of Flight contains perhaps the best introduction to the general theory of stability, while the introduction to dynamics of incompressible fluids and the chapters on wing theory remain particularly valuable for their clarity of exposition and originality of thought.
Mises' position as one of the great pioneers in the development of the aeronautical sciences lends a flavor of authenticity not found in more conventional textbooks. Any student who has made himself familiar with his exposition of the fundamentals and applications will have acquired an excellent background for additional, more specialized fields of modern aeronautical engineering.
|summary=Written on the eve of World War II, this pioneering introduction to the science of aerodynamics is the work of one of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's founders. Clark B. Millikan's brief but intensive summary deals with the basic problems of aerodynamics, covering subjects essential to the background of any well-rounded aeronautical engineer. State-of-the-art at the time of its original publication, this volume will appeal to historians of science as well as to students of aerodynamics, who will welcome the chance to encounter this basic text by one of the foremost early members of their profession.
Starting with an overview of fundamental principles, the treatment examines the aerodynamicist's basic data and considers aspects of performance, longitudinal stability and control, and lateral stability and control. A selection of problems appears at the end of the book, in addition to a density and pressure altitude conversion chart and a composite performance chart.
|author=L. M. Milne-Thomson
|summary=A classic in its field, this university text and reference book has long been one of the basic works. This is the complete reprinting of the revised (1966) edition which brings the subject up to date, including a complete and probably unique chapter on conical flow round sweptback wings.
After two introductory chapters on the simplifying assumptions demanded for the study and a final chapter on vectors, the author treats the material in four fairly well-defined parts: (1) two-dimensional aerofoils (two-dimensional motion, rectilinear vortices, the circular cylinder as an aerofoil, Joukowski's transformation, theory of two-dimensional aerofoils, and thin aerofoils); (2) three-dimensional aerofoils (induced velocity, aerofoils of finite aspect ratio, the lifting line theory, lifting surface theory, propellers, and wind tunnel corrections); (3) subsonic and supersonic flow (subsonic flow, supersonic flow, supersonic sweptback and delta wings); and, (4) the aircraft as a whole (simple flight problems, moments, and stability). The treatment is founded on complex variable and vector methods, both of which are explained in the self-contained text. A wealth of problems, illustrations, and cross-references add to the book's value both as a text and a reference. The only prerequisite is a knowledge of the elements of the differential and integral calculus.
|author=Theodore von Karman
|publisher=Dover Publications
|summary=Authoritative and engaging, this popular history traces the science of aerodynamics from the age of Newton through the mid-twentieth century. Author Theodore von Karman, a well-known pioneer in aerodynamic research, addresses himself to readers acquainted with the facts of aviation but less familiar with the field's underlying theories.
A former director of the Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, von Karman founded the U.S. Institute of Aeronautical Sciences in 1933. In this volume, he employs straightforward, nontechnical language to recount the behind-the-scenes struggles of engineers and physicists with problems associated with lift, drag, stability, aeroelasticity, and the sound barrier. He explains how an increasing understanding of the motion of air and its forces on moving objects enabled significant improvements in airplane design, performance, and safety.
Other topics include the effects of speed on ailerons; the factors behind the phenomenon of a sonic boom; and the plethora of problems surrounding the inception of space travel: surmounting the earth's gravitational field, negotiating a safe return, and sustaining life amid the perils of interstellar radiation, weightlessness, and meteoric activity.
|summary=Perceptrons - the first systematic study of parallelism in computation - has remained a classical work on threshold automata networks for nearly two decades. It marked a historical turn in artificial intelligence, and it is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the connectionist counterrevolution that is going on today. Artificial-intelligence research, which for a time concentrated on the programming of ton Neumann computers, is swinging back to the idea that intelligence might emerge from the activity of networks of neuronlike entities. Minsky and Papert's book was the first example of a mathematical analysis carried far enough to show the exact limitations of a class of computing machines that could seriously be considered as models of the brain. Now the new developments in mathematical tools, the recent interest of physicists in the theory of disordered matter, the new insights into and psychological models of how the brain works, and the evolution of fast computers that can simulate networks of automata have given Perceptrons new importance.Witnessing the swing of the intellectual pendulum, Minsky and Papert have added a new chapter in which they discuss the current state of parallel computers, review developments since the appearance of the 1972 edition, and identify new research directions related to connectionism. They note a central theoretical challenge facing connectionism: the challenge to reach a deeper understanding of how "objects" or "agents" with individuality can emerge in a network. Progress in this area would link connectionism with what the authors have called "society theories of mind." Marvin L. Minsky is Donner Professor of Science in M.I.T.'s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. Seymour A. Papert is Professor of Media Technology at M.I.T. .
|author=S. G. Rajeev
|publisher=Oxford University Press
|summary=Fluid Mechanics: A Geometrical Point of View emphasizes general principles of physics illustrated by simple examples in fluid mechanics. Advanced mathematics (e.g., Riemannian geometry and Lie groups) commonly used in other parts of theoretical physics (e.g. General Relativity or High Energy Physics) are explained and applied to fluid mechanics. This follows on from the author's book Advanced Mechanics (Oxford University Press, 2013).

After introducing the fundamental equations (Euler and Navier-Stokes), the book provides particular cases: ideal and viscous flows, shocks, boundary layers, instabilities, and transients. A restrained look at integrable systems (KdV) leads into a formulation of an ideal fluid as a hamiltonian system. Arnold's deep idea, that the instability of a fluid can be understood using the curvature of the diffeomorphism group, will be explained. Leray's work on regularity of Navier-Stokes solutions, and the modern developments arising from it, will be explained in language for physicists.

Although this is a book on theoretical physics, readers will learn basic numerical methods: spectral and finite difference methods, geometric integrators for ordinary differential equations. Readers will take a deep dive into chaotic dynamics, using the Smale horse shoe as an example. Aref's work on chaotic advection is explained. The book concludes with a self-contained introduction to renormalization, an idea from high energy physics which is expected to be useful in developing a theory of turbulence.
|summary=Computational Geometry: Curve and Surface Modeling provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of computational geometry. This book discusses the geometric properties of parametric polynomial curves by using the theory of affine invariants for algebraic curves. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the objects studies in computational geometry, namely surfaces and curves. This text then explores the developments in the theory and application of spline functions, which began with cubic spline functions. Other chapters consider the mechanical background of the cubic spline functions, which is the wooden spline with small deflection. This book discusses as well that in mathematical lofting the information of a geometric shape is given by a set of data points, while in geometric design other ways of representations are available. The final chapter deals with the concepts in the theory of algebraic curves. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.
